Wilderness Areas

The Arctic Wilderness is a tempting challenge for experienced hikers. Here, you can travel for days without seeing another human being.

There are four wilderness areas in Enontekiö: Käsivarsi, Tarvantovaara, Pöyrisjärvi and Pulju. Each have their own character and biome.

The Käsivarsi Wilderness Area has the tallest fells in Finland with peaks over one kilometre high. The Nordkalott Trail that splits the wilderness will take you from Kilpisjärvi to Halti. It’s a 50-kilometre journey, one way.

Tarvantovaara’s Highlands are dominated by large rivers. The marshlands are known for their permafrost mounds. Tarvantovaara is also popular for fishing and birdwatching.

Lake Pöyrisjärvi is the crown jewel in Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area. The second-largest body of water in Enontekiö glows bright blue in the horizon long before you get there. The surrounding sand dunes might remind you of the savannas in Africa.

Pulju Wilderness Area is full of diverse birdlife and cloudberries in the late summer. Pulju Wildreness Area connects Pyörisjärvi Wildrenessa Area and Lemmenjoki National Park.

Do remember

The wilderness is special to the people of Enontekiö. The reindeer that roam there are their livelihood. You’re welcome in the wilderness as long as you leave no trace and don’t bother the reindeer. Always close reindeer gates after you.
