Located right next to the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and Lake Ounasjärvi, the village of Hetta is known for its lively atmosphere. Being the regional hub of Enontekiö, Hetta is the perfect basecamp for all kinds of adventures and experiences in nature.
The Hetta region has been inhabited by man since the Stone Age. Although tourism is an important trade these days, reindeer herding and traditional crafts are still part of everyday life here. Hetta has a life of its own, but travellers are always welcome as well.
You might want to stay here for a while, as it’s a great basecamp for hiking, skiing and biking in the region. The legendary Hetta-Pallas Trail is the number one local attraction. The 50-kilometre hike starts with a boat crossing of Lake Ounasjärvi in the summertime
The Jyppyrä vantage point is a must-see for all visitors to Hetta in any season. It only requires a slight climb up a trail, but you will be rewarded with unmatched views of the national park and the nearby fells. You can also start a fire and cook up a snack while you’re there. Campfire picnics are all the rage in Hetta, and there is no shortage of venues for it.
There are all manner of guided activities available as well: you can get acquainted with the world of huskies, take a snowmobile to the Sámi village of Näkkälä or go mountain biking, paddling or snowshoeing on routes less travelled. In the winter, Hetta’s cross-country ski tracks take you to the solitude of the fells. Lake Ounasjärvi houses the multi-purpose Aurinkokeino track where people can enjoy the outdoors on the equipment of their choosing. Hetta Hiihtomaa allows you to try downhill and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
In addition to all the outdoor activities, a visit to Fell Lapland Visitor Centreshould be on your itinerary. You can learn about Sámi traditions and buy local handicrafts here. Do visit the beautiful Enontekiö Church, birdwatching towers and the local museum in the summer as well. There are two notable events in late winter: Hetta Music Festival and St Mary's Day Festival.
