Nothing beats a snowmobile when there’s places to be in the snowy wilderness. How else would the people of Enontekiö set their traps or check on their reindeer? For travellers, they open up a world of peace and grandeur among the fells. Do respect the rules, though!
Remember, snowmobiles are not covered under Everyman’s Rights. Leisure use of snowmobiles is only allowed on marked trails and tracks and over frozen waters. When it comes to nature reserves, the rules are even more strict.
You can head out on marked trails on your own or with a local guide. They might check on their reindeer while you're out – with any luck, you might get to see them as well! The snowmobile season starts in early winter and lasts late into spring. There are plenty of tracks to choose from: Enontekiö has about 600 km. Some are free but others require paid permits. Note that you cannot stray from the track without permission!
The tracks that start out from the village of Hetta don’t require permits. The Victoria route that traces the border between Finland and Sweden from Muonio to Kilpisjärvi is also free.
Permits are required in the Tarvantovaara Wilderness Area and Käsivarren Wilderness Areas and Palojärvi and Kilpisjärvi in the Lätäseno-Hietajoki Mire Reserve as well as the tracks between Syväjärvi and Karesuvanto and Raittijärvi and Saarikoski. The permits can be obtained from Metsähallitus (eraluvat.fi). The snowmobile routes around Kilpisjärvi are maintained by the local ski club. You need to purchase permits on their website at kilpisjarvenladut.fi.
Public snowmobile trails are open whenever snow and ice conditions allow.
Trails maintained by Metsähallitus will be marked during February.
On any snowmobile trails, you drive at your own risk.
Depending on the route, you can either choose to travel in a sleigh or ride your own machine. The most popular destinations around Kilpisjärvi are Three Nation’s Border Point and Halti. From Hetta, you can head to the Sámi village of Näkkälä, Pöyrisjärvi or Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
