Skiing

Open fells in the distance, nothing but the sound of your skis on snow around you.

Enontekiö has hundreds of kilometres of ski tracks on natural snow. What sets us apart is the number of maintained tracks in the open fells

Here, the ski season usually starts in October or November. he track network is at its greatest from March till mid-April, when the long days let you ski to your heart’s content. However, there’s still snow to ski in June!

Most of the ski tracks in Enontekiö can be found around Hetta, Yli-Kyrö and KilpisjärviThe tracks are maintained by local cross-country ski clubs.

In Hetta the ski season starts on the lighted track going up to Jyppyrä. When winter starts to turn to spring, the track network expands to the north and across the lake towards the fells. For sunny spring skiing, nothing beats the multi-purpose Aurinkokeino track on Lake Ounasjärvi. The routes have plenty of variety for beginners as well as experts. For a real challenge, experienced skiers can take a tour all the way to Pallas on the wilderness trail.

In Yli-Kyrö there are tracks suitable for all ages as well as demanding mountain routes. The tracks setting off from the Vuontispirtti fell hotel are connected with the routes in Raattama and Ylläs-Pallastunturi National Park. When the network is at its most extensive, you can ski all the way to Hetta. There are shelters along the routes that are great places to take a break and a sip from your thermos.

In Kilpisjärvi, the stunning fell landscapes make the tracks irresistible in late winter. You can admire the stark features of Saana on the lake’s easy track or choose a more demanding route around the fell. Malla Strict Nature Reserve and Three Nations' Border Point can also be reached over land or ice. Kilpisjärvi is a great place to start longer ski tours into the wilderness – as long as you’re prepared for the Arctic weather and conditions.
