Have the ride of your life in Enontekiö’s highlands and forests! Our diverse trails are some of the best in Finland.
First-timers should head for the Jatuninkangas (15 km) and Ahovaara (4 km) trails in Yli-Kyrö. These easy routes will take you through beautiful pine forests. The Ahovaara trail will include some moderate climbs and downhill sections.
The trail to the Pyhäkero hut starts east of Hetta and is suitable for beginners. The climbs do take their toll, so be prepared. The 10-kilometre route is marked. From the hut, you can continue on foot or bike towards the top of Pyhäkero.
If you want to take a look at the fells from the other direction, try the Pahakuru mountain bike trail that starts from Hietajärvi. The 23-km route has lots of climbs and descents as well as some rocky sections – but plenty of easy cycling as well. The open views up in the fells are worth the effort! You can also bike through the entire Hetta-Pallas Trail (about 50 km).
The marked hiking trails that start from Fell Lapland Visitor Centre in Hetta and the village of Kilpisjärvi are also open for bikes. The trails are mostly intermediate due to their technical terrain and climbs, so they are only recommended for experienced riders.
Lake Pöyrisjärvi has become popular among fatbike enthusiasts because of the sand dunes that evoke images of the African savannah. You can get to the Pöyrisjärvi hut from the village of Näkkälä via an ATV track. The route is not marked, but it is very distinct. It’s a 16-kilometre one-way journey.
There are other ATV tracks in the wilderness areas that are suitable for mountain bikes as well. Be prepared to navigate on your own, as the trails are not marked. Consider your safety as well: pack extra clothes and food for unexpected weather and other delays.
The wilderness tracks are used for reindeer herding. So be considerate and make sure you don’t interfere with the work. Close all reindeer gates behind you.
Local guiding companies provide guided biking tours that will take you safely to the greatest spots in the Arctic wilderness. Many companies also rent bikes and are happy to give advice on trails. You can buy proper maps for navigation from the Visitor Centres.
For more information about routes and conditions at the National Park and wilderness areas please contact the local Visitor Centres.
