Our birdwatching towers offer a glimpse into Arctic birdlife in all its variety and bustle.
Nestled between the river and fells, is a great place to meet the Siberian jay. A friend of outdoorspeople, they will happily share your lunch. In addition to birds, you can admire the Ounastunturi and Pallastunturi fells.
You can reach the Yrjö Kokko birdwatching tower by taking road 956 towards Vuontisjärvi for 9.5 km from the Fell Lapland Visitor Centre intersection. The best time for birdwatching is in April and May when the first migrations start. We don’t recommend driving the last 300 meters to the tower. There is a lean-to, campfire spot and toilet at the site. The address is Ounastie 1257, Enontekiö.
The lush Lake Sotkajärvi is surrounded by marshlands and its inhabitants include the smew, swan, sea eagle, duck and goose. Both towers can also delight you with the enthralling song of Lapland’s nightingale, the bluethroat.
Lake Sotkajärvi is 18 km from Hetta towards Palojoensuu. The tower is just north of Road 93. Its address is Hetantie 1635, Enontekiö. The car park has a lean-to and campfire spot and a toilet can be found nearby. The tower is accessible for people with disabilities.
Another spot for birdwatching is the Markkinajänkä tower, sometimes called the Mannakoski tower, which is 6 to 8 km north of Karesuvanto. There is no signpost for the tower, so take care when approaching. Its address is Käsivarrentie 4466, Enontekiö. There is a lean-to, campfire spot and toilet at the site.
