Enontekiö means the "source of great rivers". Muonionjoki River and Könkämäeno divide Finland and Sweden. Ounasjoki River starts from Lake Ounasjärvi, another ancient way of transport.
The free-flowing River Ounasjoki includes mellow routes as well as challenging sections. It will take you to pristine wilderness areas as well as charming villages. Käkkälöjoki and Palojoki are perfect for beginners. The Käsivarsi Wilderness Area is home to Lätäseno, the hardest whitewater paddling route in Finland.
The best paddling season in Enontekiö is from early June to end of September. Please note, that water level in the rivers may vary during and between the seasons.
If you’re familiar with the sport, you can rent all the necessary equipment.
If you’re just starting out, many local companies provide guided paddling tours that will take you to the beautiful waters of Enontekiö.
The wilderness is special to the people of Enontekiö. The reindeer that roam there are their livelihood. You’re welcome in the wilderness as long as you leave no trace and don’t bother the reindeer. Always close reindeer gates after you.
