The Muotkatakka rest stop on Highway 21, about 12 km south of Kilpisjärvi, is significant for a number of reasons. First, it’s the highest point of Finnish highway network, at 565,8 metres above sea level. You’re greeted with stunning views of Lake Kilpisjärvi and the mountains of Norway.
There is also a trail to the top of Leutsuvaara, which will provide even grander views.
This is also where the last cannons were fired in the Lapland War in April 1945. The last German units left during the same month and Finland considered the hostilities ended.
There is a memorial dedicated to the event at the rest stop.
