When the skies are clear, you can see the northern lights on three out of four nights in Enontekiö. Wear warm clothes, bring a thermos and be prepared for the light show of your life!
The auroras are created when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth's atmosphere near the geomagnetic poles. This is why you’re more likely to see them the further north you go. The local folklore explained the lights as a fox running on the fells and sparking its tail against the snow.
You can see a forecast of the upcoming auroral activity from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Remember to check the weather as well – clouds can ruin the show..
